(PLEASE be mindful that several songs here will be difficult to watch, especially for families that have been affected by deportation experiences.) 1. The students could read it over it and get the gist. I mean that with some teacher support, the song will be useful and largely comprehensible. By saying a song is novice-high, I don’t mean that a NH student will immediately understand every word. I attempted to attach a level to each song– hopefully it’s accurate. In reality, people move countries for varied reasons, and under many circumstances. With these songs, I hope to offer more than “one story,” so your students can connect to varied artistic voices and perspectives. If our resources are lopsided, just one story gets told: it’s easy for students to walk away assuming every undocumented immigrant has a similar back story, or that most immigrants are undocumented. For other classrooms, the temptation to apply stereotypes and generalize is huge. If you have a large population of immigrant families, the topic obviously hits close to home. I think it’s hard to teach a unit on immigration. These shouldn’t be missed, so I’m devoting a whole post to them. And wow– I came across some amazing music.

While researching for a post on immigration, I decided to look into songs. Excessive touring accompanied many of these albums, seeing the band travel all over Central and North America.Inside: Spanish songs about immigration: a playlist. The next few years saw a flood of releases, which included “De Sinaloa para el Mundo” (2011), “Grandes Exitos” (2012), “El Buen Ejemplo” (2012), “Corridos de Alto Calibre” (2013), “La Recompensa” (2013), “Contigo” (2014), and “Lo Mejor De.” (2015). The group’s sound continued to grow in sophistication and as their music progressed so did their popularity and demand for new material. It also placed them in an state of renown held by their contemporaries like El Komander, Regulo Caro and Los Titanes de Durango.

The album was a strong debut and featured the three singles “Callejero y Mujeriego”, “culiacan vs. Their 1st studio album “Renovar o Morir” entered the market in 2010 through the label Disa Records. Apart from it’s reputation as a lucrative tourist town it is also widely recognized for it strong musical heritage. Founded by vocalist and accordionist Edén Muñoz in 2010, Calibre 50 is an award-winning Mexican band that specializes in a whole host of regional styles such as norteño, corridos, and ranchera. The group formed towards the end of the 2000s in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, a bustling town on the Pacific positioned near the center of the coast. Outside of Calibre 50 Munoz has worked with and composed music for acts ranging from Banda Carnaval, Julion Alvarez y Su Norteno, Rio Roma, Conjunto Atardecer, La Estructura, Los Canarios de Michoacan, and Alerta Zero (an incomplete list riddled with several exemptions).
